MONTREAL — A pair of valuable musical instruments have been removed from a Montreal heritage building that caught fire last week, raising hopes that they can be saved to play again.Simon Blanchet, program director at the Chapelle du Bon-Pasteur, says a Fazioli concert grand piano and a 1772 Kirckman harpsichord were both removed on Saturday from the concert venue inside the chapel of the 19th century former monastery. He said both instruments sustained some moisture damage and will have to dry out before they can be fully assessed. But he said both were protected by covers and he’s hopeful technicians will be able to restore them.Blanchet said the instruments’ survival is a small bright light in a devastating week that has seen Montreal musicians lose one of their most important concert venues. The blaze broke out Thursday at the 19th century building, which also includes a residence for seniors, a housing cooperative and a daycare centre in addition to the concert hall.Thi...The fastest 96 year old woman in the world: Ottawa woman breaks 5K race record

OTTAWA — Rejeanne Fairhead says until two years ago the most athletic things she had ever done over more than nine decades of life involved bowling and horse shoes. Now the 96-year-old is a world-record holding racer. Fairhead completed the five-kilometre race at the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend Saturday in just over 51 minutes. The world record for that distance among women over the age of 95 was demolished by almost five minutes.Fairhead says she never thought of herself as an athlete before, but believes age is just a number and if you feel like you can do something you shouldn’t let it keep you from trying. She says she is glad she is an inspiration to others and takes pride in her efforts, which have also raised more than $7,400 for the Perley Health Foundation in Ottawa. Former U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney implored new college graduates to not compromise when it comes to the truth, excoriating her House Republican colleagues for not doing enough to combat former President Donald Trump’s lies that the 2020 election was stolen. In a commencement speech at Colorado College, the Wyoming Republican repeated her fierce criticisms of Trump but steered clear of talking about his 2024 reelection campaign or her own political future.Cheney, who graduated from Colorado College in 1988, recalled being a political science student walking into a campus building where a Bible verse was inscribed above the entrance that read, “Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.”“After the 2020 election and the attack of January 6th, my fellow Republicans wanted me to lie. They wanted me to say the 2020 election was stolen, the attack of January 6th wasn’t a big deal, and Donald Trump wasn’t dangerous,” Cheney said Sunday in Colorado Springs, connecting her expe...“The Little Mermaid” makes box office splash with $95.5 million opening

AUBURN, Maine (AP) — A raccoon in Maine was euthanized and tested for rabies after a woman brought it into a pet store for a nail trim and some customers kissed it, state wildlife authorities said. The raccoon tested negative for the disease, and there is no rabies risk to the public, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife spokesperson Mark Latti said Sunday. However, raccoons are one of the most common carriers of rabies in the state, and bringing the wild animal into a pet store constituted an unnecessary risk to public health, Latti said. The woman, who has not been identified by authorities, brought the raccoon into an Auburn pet store on Tuesday, the wildlife department said. She was seeking to get the animal's nails trimmed, which is a service the store does not provide to raccoons, the department said. AUSTIN (KXAN) — Four years had passed since Robert and Kathy Dyer lost their 18-year-old son, Graham. I sat with the couple in the kitchen of their home outside of Paris, Texas, in late 2017. It was just months since they shared their story with state lawmakers in support of a bill to close an obscure provision in the Texas Public Information Act – something known as the “dead suspect loophole.”“No family should have to go through the suffering of not knowing the details of how their child has passed,” Kathy told me. “What a shock! I thought a parent would have a right to records to see what the truth was. It’s all captured on video. To say that you don’t have a right to that – it’s just crazy.” Watch the KXAN docuseries, DENIED, about the Graham Dyer in-custody death case The loophole was part of an exemption in place since 1997, originally meant to protect of the privacy of people wrongfully accused who wanted to prevent the exposure of details surrounding their arrest. Smoked paprika in the sauce hints at the flavor you would get from the grill. Food Stylist: Simon Andrews. (David Malosh, The New York Times)Nothing compares to live fire, but even if you don’t have a grill, you can make chicken that’s burnished and sticky with barbecue sauce. To achieve a similar smokiness on the stovetop, paint boneless, skinless chicken with some barbecue sauce and sear it so the sugars in the sauce caramelize and char. The sauce here leans tangy and spicy, but adjust it as you like. Once the chicken is cooked, let the sauce bubble until glossy enough to slather onto the chicken.By Ali SlagleY...Latest news
